I love it when a happy crafting accident leads to a discovery...and today's 30 minute Thursday project is a classic example of this...i discovered through laziness that if you don't clean your Melt Pot thoroughly enough when you've been using gold embossing powder in it...and then you add clear UTEE...you get something that looks remarkably similar to amber!! Personally, i've always had a love affair with amber...so i'm particularly tickled by this discovery :0) Add into that the fact that it occurred to me that this technique could be used to make interchangeable charms...and i have to say i'm rather chuffed with today's offering! *blushes slightly*
What you need:
Clear UTEE
Flex
Ranger Ink Essentials Memory Frame
Chipboard shape/costume jewellery pieces/small flowers...whatever you like really as long as it fits in your frame!
leather thong
What you do:
This is such a simple project that i haven't even bothered to give you step by step photos...i really don't think you need them.
First off, melt the clear UTEE in your Melt Pot with a tiny smidge of gold embossing powder {less really is more here and the gold powder is opaque and we want a beautiful translucent liquid}...while that is heating...lay your frame onto a non~stick craft mat and arrange your inclusions in the frame. In the sample above i've used a chipboard flower {from Bee Crafty} which i coloured with gold Brilliance ink. When the UTEE is liquid carefully pour it into the frame, over the flower and gently press half a press stud into the flower centre...leave it to cool...add a thong and some beads and you're done!! See...i told you it was easy!!! I''ve only popped a short length of thonging on this one as we both like the look of it hanging in the kitchen window.
As long as you are careful not to add too much UTEE {no going over the edges}...and because of the way the frames open and close...you can remover the cooled charm...and then do another one with all sorts of other things in the *amber*...i've used a chipboard letter with a fabric rose and some small flowers with some glass chips...but if you want to go for realism with your pendant maybe you could try a dead fly!! ;0)
My favourite of the pieces i tried was this one...with a rather yummy piece of broken jewellery in the middle and i've hung this one on a long thong to wear as a Winter necklace over a cowl neck jumper.
The jewellery piece was quite chunky so the gemstone *ahem* section sticks up above the *amber* and the whole thing feels rather sumptuous. :0)
And there you have it...a simple idea that can be used to create pendants to wear or for hanging in the window...even to hang on the Christmas tree would be lovely. I'm bursting to make a steampunk version of this too with clock parts and cogs...i think that would be fabulous!
Thanks for stopping by and i do hope you'll give this technique a go...

caption competition! :)
a little bit of fun for the week ahead...and a fun prize too :)
firstly a LO...this week i've been trying to finally scrap the photos from my hen~do...my lovely sister took it upon herself to organize a fun hippy themed fancy dress party for me which was a hoot...although i think i might have been the most enthusiastic about the dressing up part!! lol

with the hippy theme, it was important to include a serious amount of flower power on the page...and i really like to mix and match styles so...i've included printed flowers with brads for middles...

i also created my own hippy daisies by die cutting some orange leather i had from a sofa swatch and filling the middles with enamel accents and micro beads...and drawing on some simple stems with a white pen...

and i finished my trio of different floral embellishments with a layered flower created from a felt shape overlayed with a fabric on and a cordroy brad...i love how all the flowers work together...and i hope you do too!

i've used a sketch for this photo of me {a rarity in that i actually like this photo of me} and its from the fabulous Pencillines sketch site...check it out here. The sketch is actually for their design team search...and i haven't applied...but i liked the sketch so i've used it anyway!

now...on to the fun caption competition...one of the reasons i've struggled so much to scrap this event is because everytime i get the photos out...i get the giggles and get lost in the memories of this fun evening...there are so many funny/silly/amusing photos but i've chosen this one for you all to write an amusing caption to:

please leave your caption and your details in the comments to this post...and next week i will pick a winner who will get a prize {related to what is actually happening in this photo!}

so...i leave you to ponder and amuse yourselves with thinking of a caption that sums up what might be happening here?? you don't have to get the answer right...i'll pick the one that makes me and his Nibs giggle the most!
enjoy...but keep it clean please!! ;)

however shocking your knitting...

...when your 92 year old Granny asks you to make her a knitted cover for her hottie for Christmas...you have to have a go, right? so...here is my slightly feeble attempt...but i know she'll love snuggling up to it...and i did make it with a velcro fastening to be kind to her slightly wonky fingers :0)

on the slightly more successful side of things...i've made another bag for a gift...this time a handbag shopper in a pouch...for those times when you pop out and unexpectedly just have to buy a fabulous pair of shoes...or a loaf of bread :0)
the pouch is simply created by cutting an envelope shape from a soft leather off cut, and stitching the two sides, the fastening is created with velcro...and a fabulous grommet adds a decorative detail...easy!

...when the pouch is opened...it reveals a beautiful light weight shopping bag, made from a gorgeous silky scarf i found in our local charity shop...so you're doing everyone a favour here, right? ;0)

...i just thought this scarf was too beautiful not to show you the whole thing!! notice how its creased...i've ironed the folds into the fabric, so that it is easy to pop back in the pouch when its not being used...

i'd love to hear if you like this idea? would this be the sort of gift you'd like to receive?

friendship cuffs...

ok, so if you've been paying attention, ;0) you'll remember that i said i'd be back soon with some leather cuffs...along the lines of the stamped ones i did on grungepaper a couple of weeks ago...*voila*

the pink one is actually a floral trim, which i've cut a section of and cropadiled right through the trim, so this one sits flush to the leather, whereas the loose flowers have a bit more movement to them...

and as you can see...they really are friendship cuffs...when i asked my two models to pose for me...they just had to hold hands...a real sign of friendship!! ;0)

instant crafting...and things that make me happy...
...i've never been big on the whole middle~class delayed gratification thing...so every now and then...i like to make an almost *instant* project...and these are examples that...quick...simple and immensely satisfying in that *something out of nothing* sort of way...get ready with the tacky glue!!
so there i am...twenty minutes before dinner...and it occurs to me that i cannot live another minute without a set of cute napkin rings to tidy up the table...one square of leather {from a sofa swatch book}, one pair of pinking shears, 4 crochet flowers {these adorable ones were ready~made} and 8 spots of Tacky glue later...i have a unique set ready to go...and the rice hasn't even boiled yet...
i actually made 4 but i have a crafters' obsession with 3 of things...so i only pictured 3!!! ;0)
...with the remaining 10 minutes i decided it was about time i had a new bookmark {as the last one got returned to the library by mistake!}...this was a bit more time consuming...i cut out the leather...set an eyelet in one end, layers all the scraps from a gorgeous set of Bo Bunny rubons to make the design...and added a few strands of beads...

so...for very minimal expense or activity...i have new things for me and my home...a virtuous feeling in my heart...and to top it all...the last 3 days of glorious sun has had this effect on the garden:

...on the carport floor...who's the fairest of them all? ;0)

apart from all that its exactly the same!! thanks Dyan!
just in case you're wondering...the reason i've made all these changes...is that i intend to use this as part of the *art installation* i'm working on for my lounge {oooooh get me!!} lol

swap a doodle dandy!
I don't often do this, but I've joined a swap over on UKS...and this one is a bookmark swap. It inspired me to have a play with the leather swatches I got from e-bay:
This is only the top half of the bookmark, just in case the swapee is looking...I want there to still be an element of suprize!! ha haa I put the orange leather through the Big Shot and although it was hard work turning the handle, it cut out a dream. The rest I cut with my sewing scissors! I've also used a We R Memory Keepers grommet as the flower centre, I love these cuties!! :)
